Bases Of Surf Fishing Equipment

Spinning Surf Tackle - Spinning and casting gear is used for surf fishing, each with its advantages and disadvantages. With spinning items, rods 8 to 16 feet in length are generally used, as well as surf reels that are corrosion resistant, have regular drag and have a large spool for many lines and long throws. Most anglers prefer spinning equipment for its versatility, rotational speed, and generally safe casting. This is the best setting for small or medium sized fish or speedsters in waves like Little Tunny and Barracuda.

Casting Surf Tackle - The casting sticks are a little shorter, in the range of 8 to 12 feet, with a stronger spine. The spinning reels can be subject to background play and the awful tangle of lines known as the "bird's nest"; therefore, a model specifically designed for surf fishing is a must. This means they must be lightweight, have large coils and a magnetic molding system. Throwing equipment is better suited for fishing for heavy bait/sinkers and for big game fishing such as shark, drum and big striped bass, snook, and shark.
Surf Rod Material - Today, most surf fishing rods are made of graphite (carbon fiber), fiberglass and, more frequently, graphite composite. The graphite rods are lightweight and offer the improved feel and casting distance, while fiberglass offers greater durability and parabolic action when loaded for throwing and fighting fish. It is also more forgiving than graphite in extreme stress and accidents. The composite stems offer an excellent compromise and the best of both worlds in terms of lightness while remaining durable.
Fishing line for surf - The fishing line for spinning and casting reels is virtually the same. Although the monoline is still the proven standard for surf fishing, especially when knot strength is important or abrasive rocks are present, more and more surfers and braids for their ratio diameter/resistance high sensitivity (for faster sets of hooks). A 20-pound test line related to a fluorocarbon shock leader should cover most situations you will encounter. Your choice, however, will depend on your preferences and the type of fishing you plan to do.

In addition to having the right tackle, bait, sunglasses, clothes, shoes, etc., do yourself a favor and get sand spikes if you do not already have them. You can buy them at your bait shop or pickets or make them yourself with PVC pipes. It is not so difficult. There will come a time when you want to put your baguette for a drink, eat or just relax. You do not want to put your expensive reel, or any reel, in the sand - you will have a nightmare when you try to remove all this sand, and of course, there is a good chance that you do it. Ruin your reel if the sand gets into your drag, gears, lubricant and so on. They are also practical if you fish with circular hooks - you can simply leave your rod in the holder as you do not have to put the hook with this type of hook.
